What are the types of PLC Splitter?

2025-07-31
PLC splitters (planar waveguide optical splitters) can be categorized into the following main types based on packaging and application scenarios:
  1. Bare Fiber PLC Splitter
This type features exposed fiber interfaces and requires fusion or cold splicing for installation. It is compatible with pigtail boxes, test instruments, and other equipment, offering high-temperature resistance, compact size, and low cost.
  2. Micro PLC Splitter
This ultra-compact package (as small as 4 x 7 x 60 mm) is suitable for high-density installation environments, such as fiber distribution frames or inside terminal equipment.
  3. Box PLC Splitter (ABS BOX)
Protected by an ABS plastic housing, it supports wall-mounting or cabinet-mounting. It is commonly used in FTTH drop terminals or optical distribution boxes, and can support up to 64 splitter channels.
  4. Card-Based PLC Splitter
This modular design fits into standard rack slots, facilitating flexible expansion and maintenance. It is suitable for central office equipment (such as OLT cabinets).
  5. Rack-mount PLC Splitter
Integrated in a standard 19-inch rack, it supports centralized management of multiple modules and is suitable for large-scale passive optical network (EPON/GPON) deployments.
Other Classification Dimensions:
  • Splitting Types: 1*N (single input, multiple output) and 2*N (dual input, multiple output).
  • Number of Splits: Common split ratios range from 1:2 to 1:64, with some manufacturers offering custom splits with higher densities such as 1:128.
All splitters are based on quartz-substrate waveguide technology and meet reliability standards such as GR-1221-CORE.
